When I became a father I decided that getting stronger was one of my main priorities. The problem with this goal is that there are so many different ways to approach it that can be daunting to pick the right one.

Luckily, I bumped into the story of Great Milo of Croton, and then it became clear the path I wanted to take.

Milo of Croton was an Olympic winner six times in a row. He lived around 6 century BC in the city of Croton. He had won many titles including 32 wrestling competitions.

But what makes him rather interesting is his unique training methods.

So what was his training all about?

He decided to carry a newborn calf on his shoulders. Day by day, for more than four years, he carried an animal on his shoulders. While people were laughing at him, the small calf slowly grew into an adult ox and Milo got stronger and stronger along the way. What an excellent idea. Every day, when Milo woke up, he lifted the calf, put it on his shoulders, and carried it around all day. After four years, Milo was lifting and carrying around an impressively big ox. By then, people stopped laughing a long time ago, when they saw Milo’s muscles and strength grow.

What if I would replace the calf with my daughter? Could I use a similar approach to get stronger? is this a crazy, stupid idea?

When I shared the idea with my wife, she answered my questions immediately, and without a sign of hesitation.

So, I understood that I needed to use my ingenuity and create a slightly different path following the same principles used by Milo.

The solution was simple… kettlebells. I decided to move into the kettlebell arena and use kettlebells to replace Milo’s calf or in my specific case, my daughter. I acquired three kettlebells of 16, 24, and 32 kg.

Since then, I’ve been training with kettlebells almost daily. I designed my own 12-week training program that allows me moving up in volume during the 12 weeks until I am ready to move to the next weight. This system allows me to make sure I can handle with ease a weight equivalent to the one of my daughter.

What about you? Are you willing to take the challenge and design your own solution to get stronger using this concept?

Use your kids to help you get where you want to get. They are probably the best source of motivation and energy you could ever find.
